Taking Things For Granted

Sometimes we get so caught up in life that we take everything we have and everything that we’ve accomplished so far, for granted.  This is especially true for entrepreneurs who are typically moving at a million miles per hour!  We get caught up in the next great idea or the next great big project and forget to enjoy what we have actually achieved.  We fail to enjoy the successes that have become part of our lives.

We simply don’t take the time to enjoy the little things.  The little things, however, aren’t so little after all.

The little things are that extra time you can spend with your kids, or the great story that they are telling during dinner.  Or that great mini vacation you just took.  Or the things you have been able to acquire because of your success.  The cars, the house, the toys, the gifts, etc…

Acquiring these things is nothing.  Enjoying these things is everything.

In my experience, I’ve found that the things I take for granted, usually go away.  Whether its people or things, they simply move on from my life.  And it is usually at that time that I realize how much I really miss them and wish that I would have not taken them for granted or spent more time enjoying them.  It happens every time!

So the lesson here is to slow down a bit and smell the roses.  Take the time to enjoy the little things.  Observe the fine details.  Take the time to journal the experience.  I think that you will find a deeper appreciation for everything in your life.

Things also become much clearer, like watching something in HD or 3D.  It’s amazing what you will see when you just quiet your mind and take things in!  You will be in awe when you actually do.

Ultimately, I think that you’ll also find deeper meaning in everything you do.

Today, take the time to slow down.  Even if it is for 5 minutes.  Close your eyes.  Take 3 deep breaths to clear your mind, open your eyes and observe.  Observe the details.  Look at how awesome everything you have is.  I think by the end of this exercise, you will have a better appreciation for all of the wonderful things in your life.

Me, I try to work on this everyday and I am getting better at it.  But just like anything else, this requires daily practice until it becomes a habit.

What are you taking for granted?
